Sophomore Brianne Comden scored 21 points to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to an 86-68 win over Wesley College on Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Center. The Eagles improve to 9-4 overall, and 5-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The Eagles jumped out to a 15-3 lead in the opening four and a half minutes, led by a pair of baskets from Aubrey Howland. Wesley trimmed the lead down over the next seven minutes, and tied the score at 23 with 8:37 remaining in the half.
A three pointer by Claire Haeuptle spurred an 8-0 run that gave the Eagles a 31-23 advantage, and pushed the lead to 41-25 with 2:37 left. Wesley was able to pull to within eleven, at 43-32, at halftime.
The Eagles used five points from Comden and a three pointer from Haeuptle to raise the lead to 17, at 56-39, and another Comden jumper pushed the lead to 18, at 58-40. Wesley hung around, trimming the deficit to seven with 10 minutes remaining, and cut the margin to six at 71-65 with 6:11 remaining.
From there, the Eagles pulled away quickly, using a 15-1 run to put the game away. Six points from senior Caitlin Ciniero and five from Sarah Listenbee spearheaded the charge.
The Eagles shot a blistering 59.3% from the field (35-59), making 6-14 three pointers, and went 10-18 from the free throw line. Wesley shot 44.9% from the field (22-49), with 13-30 three pointers, and shot 11-16 on free throws.
Comden shot 9-11 from the field, and was 3-4 from the free throw line. Haeuptle scored 16 points on 6-12 shooting with four three pointers. Brionna Johnson led Wesley with 20 points.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Southern Virginia University at 5:30 p.m.
