Comden, Haeuptle Post Season Highs in 83-44 Win at Shenandoah

Sophomore Brianne Comden scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and senior Claire Haeuptle scored a season-high 20 points in leading the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to an 83-44 win at Shenandoah University on Monday evening in Winchester, Va. The Eagles improve to 8-3 on the season.

The Eagles reeled off a 47-18 halftime lead, thanks to 47.5% shooting, including 6-10 three pointers. Comden scored 14 points in 14 minutes, while Haeuptle added 12 in nine minutes.

With the score tied at four in the early going, UMW used a 12-0 run, capped by a pair of baskets from freshman Taylor Barton, to take a 16-4 lead with 11:33 left in the first half. Haeuptle then added a pair of three pointers to push the lead to 26-8 with 7:52 to go, and added another a minute later as UMW scored 21 points in the final six minutes of the half to take a decisive 47-18 lead to halftime.

The Eagles picked up where they left off to open the second half, scoring the first three baskets, on layups from Barton and Comden, pushing the lead to 53-18. The Eagles kept the lead above thirty the rest of the way, as Comden and Haeuptle each scored eight in the second half, with Barton and freshman Kiana Smith coming off the bench to tally six points apiece.

For the game, UMW went 35-80 from the floor (43.8%), making 9-20 three pointers (including six from Haeuptle - one shy of the school record), and went 4-6 from the foul line. Shenandoah shot 17-58 from the field (29.3%), making 3-14 three pointers and 7-10 free throws. The Eagles dominated the boards, leading in rebounds, 60-29.

The win sets up a key battle on Wednesday, as the Eagles host Salisbury University at 6 p.m. The two teams are tied atop the CAC standings with 4-0 records.
