UMW Women's Basketball Tops Marymount, 47-37, in Saturday CAC Matinee

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team limited visiting Marymount University to 37 points in topping the Saints, 47-37, on Saturday at the William M. Anderson Center, to remain unbeaten in Capital Athletic Conference play at 4-0.

In a typical low scoring, defensive effort between the two teams, both teams struggled for points. The Eagles started with a flourish, however, running out to a 9-0 lead in the opening four minutes, thanks to baskets from four of the five starters.

The Eagles ran the lead to 11, at 13-2, on a Sarah Listenbee jumper, and the UMW lead swung back and forth between seven and 10 for the next seven minutes, as senior Claire Haeuptle sank a pair of free throws to build the lead to 21-10 with 3:38 left in the half. Freshman Kendall Parker added a pair of free throws to move the lead to 13, but the Saints scored the final four points of the half to cut the halftime deficit to 25-17.

Marymount stuck close early in the second, cutting the deficit to six on three occasions in the first six minutes, but each time UMW would answer. The Eagles pushed the lead to 10 at 35-25 with 9:19 to play, and the Saints would draw no closer than seven the rest of the way, as sophomore Brianne Comden scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the second half.

Mary Washington shot 36.2% from the floor (17-47), with one three point basket, and went 12-27 from the free throw line. Marymount shot 23% (14-61) with three three pointers, and was 6-9 from the line. Marymount held a 53-33 rebounding advantage, but committed 22 turnovers.

Comden led the Eagles with 12 points on 5-7 shooting from the field, as the lone Eagle in double figures. Haeuptle and Listenbee each had eight points, and senior Aubrey Howland added seven points and eight rebounds for UMW. Marymount was led by Leah Hurst's 11 points.

The Eagles will return to action on Monday when they visit Shenandoah University at 5:00 p.m. in nonconference action.
