UMW Women's Basketball Tops York, 64-47, in CAC Saturday Matinee

Sophomore Brianne Comden scored a game-high 16 points to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 64-47 win at York College of Pa. on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 4-2 on the season, and 2-0 in CAC play.

"Today, we had a solid team effort with high energy off the bench", said UMW head coach Deena Applebury. "We were able to consistently apply defensive pressure and we are getting more offense off the pass."

The teams traded the lead in the early going, with York grabbing a 4-0 lead, but the lead would change hands four times in the opening 12 minutes, with neither team leading by more than five. The Eagles took the lead at 23-21 with 3:13 remaining in the first half, which spurred a 10-2 run to end the half. Taylor Barton, Aubrey Howland, and Erin Drumheller each made baskets in the run, and the Eagles sank four straight free throws to lead, 32-23, at halftime.

The second half saw the Eagles begin with another 10-2 spurt to up the lead to 17, at 42-25, with 15:01 left, on a Howland layup. York was able to cut their defricit to 10 on three occasions in the next several minutes, but each time the Eagles responded with big shots, including a three pointer from senior Claire Haeuptle and baskets from Comden, Caitlin Ciniero, and Erin Drumheller.

A layup from Barton with 1:43 left returned the lead to 17 at 66-41, and free throws from Howland and Drumheller kept the Spartans at arm's length in the 64-47 victory.

Comden went 7-10 from the floor for her 16 points, and Haeuptle and Howland each scored 10 for the Eagles, with Barton scoring eight points and grabbing nine rebounds. Meghan King had eight rebounds in 12 minutes for UMW. York was led by Sam Hruz's 11 points.

The Eagles shot 46.2% from the floor (24-52), making 2-10 three pointers, and went 14-25 from the free throw line. York shot 29.2% from the field (14-48), making 4-16 three pointers and went 15-28 from the line. The Eagles held a commanding 49-30 lead in rebounding, and both teams committed 21 turnovers.

Mary Washington will return to action next Saturday following final exams, when they visit St. Mary's College of Md. at 1:00 p.m.
