UMW Women's Basketball Opens CAC Play with 66-30 Win Over Frostburg State

Senior Claire Haeuptle scored a game-high 12 points to lead a balanced attack as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team opened its Capital Athletic Conference schedule with a 66-30 win over Frostburg State University on Wednesday evening at the Anderson Center. The Eagles improve to 3-2 overall, and 1-0 in league play.

The Bobcats remained close for much of the first half, as the Eagles struggled offensively early. The score stood tied at 12 with 6:48 remaining in the half, but UMW rallied with a 19-2 run to end the half. Nine different players scored in the stretch, with Brianne Comden, Haeptle, and senior Aubrey Howland each scoring four points in the run. The Eagles led at intermission, 31-13.

In the second, the Eagles picked up where they left off in the first, starting the half on a 16-4 run that upped the lead to 30, at 47-17, with 11:39 remaining. Taylor Barton scored a pair of baskets as part of her nine points on the evening.

The Eagles stayed at a comfortable margin the rest of the way, leading by as many as 37 in the final minute and claiming the 66-30 win.

UMW was led by Haeuptle's 12 points, while Comden scored 11, and freshman Kelsey Dean added 10. Barton had a career-high 14 rebounds to go with her nine points, and Sarah Listenbee added six points and nine rebounds.

The Eagles shot 31.6% from the floor, with two three pointers, and went 14-25 from the free throw line. Frostburg was limited to 23.1% shooting (9-39), and went 12-30 from the free throw line. UMW le in rebounds, 73-30, and caused 25 Bobcat turnovers.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they visit York College of Pa. in another CAC contest starting at 1:00 p.m.
