Women's Basketball Falls to Washington & Lee in OT, 64-62

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 64-62 decision in overtime to Washington & Lee University on Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Center. The Eagles fall to 2-2 on the year.

Initially, both teams struggled to score, as both strong defenses kept the opponents under 10 points in the opening 10 minutes. Washington & Lee led, 9-7, with 9:46 to play, and the Eagles tied the score at nine on a pair of Claire Haeuptle free throws with 8:34 to go in the half.

There were four leads changes in the next few minutes, but the Eagles were able to build a seven point lead by intermission, thanks to an 11-2 run to close the half. Brianne Comden had five points in the run, and Megan Green four.

Both teams heated up significantly on offense in the second, half, as UMW shot 44.8% and W&L 48%. A jumper from senior Caitlin Ciniero gave the Eagles a game-high 16 point lead with 16:22 to play (36-20), but seven straight points from the Generals cut the deficit to single digits at 36-27 with 14:27 left.

UMW led by 14, 48-34, with 9:18 to play, but again W&L responded, making another 7-0 run to push the score to 48-42 in favor of the Eagles with 4:53 to play.  After an Erin Drumheller three pointer, UMW led by nine, but W&L went on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 53-52 with 1:25 left.  An Aubrey Howland free throw gave UMW a 55-52 edge with 29 seconds left, but W&L's Jackie Clifford made a traditional three point play with 2.3 seconds left to tie the score and send the game to overtime.

In the extra period, the Generals ran up a five point lead through the first two minutes, but another Drumheller three pointer and a layup from Ciniero tied the score with 1:58 to go. The Generals connected on a pair of free throws in the final 1:27 for the two-point win.

The Eagles shot 22-61 from the floor (36.1%), making three three pointers, all from Drumheller. W&L shot 42.3% (22-52) with seven three pointers. UMW held a 42-40 rebounding edge.

Drumheller led UMW with 14 points on 5-5 shooting, including 3-3 on three pointers, as the lone Eagle in double figures. Kelsey Dean scored nine for the Eagles, as did Comden. Clifford had 19 for W&L to lead all scorers.

Mary Washington will return to action on December 3 when they open Capital Athletic Conference play against Frostburg State University. Tipoff at the Anderson Center is set for 6 p.m.
