UMW Women's Basketball Wins UMW/Hyatt Place Tipoff Tourney Crown with 61-42 Win over Widener

Senior Caitlin Ciniero scored a team-high 10 points to lead a balanced attack as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Widener University, 61-42, to win the UMW/Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament crown on Sunday at the Anderson Center.

The Eagles used their trademark defense from the start, allowing just three first half field goals in building a 34-14 halftime lead. After allowing the first basket of the game, UMW scored the next 12 points, and led, 12-2, with 9:44 remaining. A pair of Ciniero baskets keyed the run.

UMW built the lead to 17 at 23-6, with 5:21 remaining, on a jumper from junior Sarah Listenbee. A three pointer from Claire Haeuptle and a basket from Taylor Barton ran the lead to 21, at 30-9, with 3:05 left, and the Eagles led by 20, 34-14, at intermission.

The Pride saw its offense awaken in the second half, shooting 43%, but the Eagles maintained its lead for the 19-point win.

"It was a great joint effort by the team", said UMW head coach Deena Applebury. "Our toughness and togetherness was evident in our balanced play."

For the game, Ciniero was the lone Eagle in double figures, scoring 10 points on 4-7 shooting, and added five rebounds. Brianne Comden scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Barton scored six points while hauling in 10 rebounds.

Barton was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, scoring 18 points and grabbing 19 rebounds in the pair of Eagle wins. Senior Aubrey Howland and freshman Kelsey Dean were also named to the all-tournament team.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Division I Navy at 7:00 p.m.
