Eagles Fall to Marymount, 51-33, in CAC Quarterfinals

Arlington, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team saw their season end at the hands of Marymount (Va.) on Tuesday. The Eagles fell 51-33 in the quarterfinals of the CAC Tournament. UMW ends the season at 18-8 overall.

Marymount came out and hit a three to open the game, before a Brianne Comden layup and a pair of buckets from Sam Partonen pushed the Eagles ahead 6-3, forcing a Saints timeout. Marymount answered back and hit a pair of trifectas to give the Saints a lead, until senior Aby Diop hit a jumper to give the lead back to UMW 12-11. The game went back and forth for most of the middle half of the opening stanza, until Marymount took the lead for good. 

Katelyn Fischer hit a pair of free throws to give Marymount a two point lead, and expanded the lead seven at the half. Diop paced the Eagles in the first half with six points, adding four boards. Comden and Partonen each chipped in four points for the Eagles, who shot 31% in the opening half. Aliya Roseborough lead all scorers with 12 first half points for Marymount.

The Saints came out in the second half and got a pair of buckets early to extend the lead to 11. Two Comden free throws cut into the lead, but Marymount went on a 12-0 run to race in front and not look back. 

UMW tried to cut into the lead, going on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to single digits at 42-31 with 6:00 to go. Marymount would hold on down the stretch, winning 51-33.

Partonen and Comden led the Eagles in scoring with nine points apiece. Comden added a game-high 12 rebounds and five blocks. Partonen added three rebounds and one block in the contest. Diop poured in six points and seven caroms. Fellow senior Brie Matthes scored two points.

Roseborough led all scorers with 14 points for the Saints.
