Eagles Defeat Marymount, 60-42, on Saturday

Fredericskburg, Va.—The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team picked up a big 60-42 win over Marymount (Va.) Saturday. The Eagles held the Saints to only 25% (12-48) shooting for the game, including 4-22 in the first half. UMW improves to 13-6, 6-5 CAC with the win.

The Eagles got out the gate, and got out ahead 10-2, forcing a Marymount timeout. Caitlin Ciniero had four points on the run, while Sam Partonen also tallied four points.

The Saints got cut the deficit to only four points, at 13-9 after a pair of Daja Belt free throws. Then it was time for yet another big Eagle run, this time a 9-0 spurt capped off with a big Partonen three pointer. The Eagles grabbed their biggest lead of the day, with a Brie Matthes three with 34 seconds left in the half to give the Eagles a 36-14 lead going into the break.

Matthes led UMW in the opening half with nine points on 3-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Partonen and Sarah Listenbee each added seven for the Eagles, who shot 43.8% from the field in the opening half. Marymount shot just 18.2% (4-22) in the opening frame.

UMW came out of the break adding to their lead, 40-14. The Saints made a comeback mid-way through the half, cutting the deficit to as many as 13, before UMW put their foot on the gas and finished the game with a 60-42 victory.

Partonen led the Eagles with 14 points, along with four assists and two steals. Fellow senior Aby Diop added 11 points and 11 boards in the win. Listenbee had a solid game, scoring nine points to go along with nine rebounds.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Febraury 5th at St. Mary's (Md.). Tipoff with St. Mary's is at 6:00 p.m.
