Partonen Paces the Eagles Past Wesley, 79-52, on Saturday

Dover, Del.-- The Eagles defeated the Wolverines 79-52 on Saturday behind a trio of double figure scorers. UMW outscored Wesley by 20 in the second half on their way to the victory. The win improves the Eagles to 9-4, 3-3 CAC.

What started out as a back and forth contest, quickly saw each team go on a series of first half runs. Wesley struck first going on a 7-2 run to open the scoring at 11-6. 

The Wolverine lead slowly increased to nine at 19-10, before UMW started on the comeback trail. UMW went on a 12-3 run to tie the game at 22, capped by a Claire Haeuptle three pointer.

The Eagles saw themselves down 28-27, before rattling off a 7-1 run to close the half leading 35-28. Sam Partonen and Aby Diop led the Eagles in the first half, with 11 points each. UMW as a team shot 44.4% from the field and a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe.

Coming out of the locker rooms, neither team could find the basket. It was Wesley's Haley Thomas who go the scoring going, cutting the Eagle lead to five.

From there, the Eagles put the game out of reach, thanks in part to a 23-3 run that spanned eight minutes. The run was capped by a Sarah Listenbee jumper with 9:08 remaining. 

UMW took command of the game from there on out, winning 79-52. The Eagles finished the game shooting 51.7% from the field, including 5-19 (26.3%) from three. UMW shot 14-16 from the free throw line at 87.5%. 

Partonen led the way with 16 points, and added four rebounds and six steals. Aubrey Howland and Diop also scored in double figures with 15 and 13 points respectively. Howland added six rebounds and three steals, while Diop finished with five boards and one block. 

The Eagles return to action this Wednesday, January 15th. UMW hosts CAC rival Christopher Newport starting at 6:00 p.m. on "Camo Night."
