Bridgewater, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team jumped out early, and never looked back in a 70-50 victory over Bridgewater on Monday. Junior forward Aubrey Howland paced the Eagles with 18 points, one of three players in double figures. The win moves UMW to 7-3 on the season.

Mary Washington took an early lead at 7-3 after a Sam Partonen three pointer. Bridgewater would close the gap, cutting the lead to 11-7, before UMW went on an 8-2 run to jump out ahead by nine.

Bridgewater went on an 11-2 run to come all the way back to tie the game at 20-20. Mary Washington took the lead back, and led by no more than seven the rest of the half.

Claire Haeuptle had three points and Aby Diop added four points on the run to make the lead 37-28. Bridgewater would again have an answer to close out the half only trailing by two, 37-35.

The second half started off with each team trading basket for basket in a back and forth affiar. Haeuptle drilled a three pointer to start a 13-3 run that put the game away for good.

The run lasted just under eight minutes, with UMW not giving up any baskets during the spurt. Howland score eight of the 13 points on the run, with the final bucket forcing Bridgewater to call a timeout. 

UMW was led by Howland scored 18 points along with five rebounds for the Eagles who shot 46% (23-50) from the field for the game. Aby Diop and freshman Brianne Comden also scored in double figures. Diop had 13 points, while chipping in five boards. Comden just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior Sam Partonen stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, three rebounds, six assists and five steals. 

Mary Washington returns to action on Wednesday, January 8th, with a CAC contest at Salisbury. Tipoff for the game with the Sea Gulls is set for 5:30 p.m.
