Eagles Fall to #19 York College (Pa.), 53-35, on Saturday Afternoon

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to the Spartans, 53-35, on Saturday. York used a 7-0 run to start the game, and another 8-0 late in the first half to seal the victory. Aby Diop led the Eagles with nine points, adding a game high 11 rebounds. The loss drops the Eagles to 7-3, 2-2 CAC on the year.

The Spartans used a 7-0 run to get ahead early in the first half, before UMW climbed their way back into it. A couple of Aubrey Howland jumpers and a Sam Partonen layup cut the Spartan lead to 9-6 with 13:50 remaining.

UMW fought back, reducing the York lead to two, thanks in part to a Diop layup and a Brianne Comden free throw. The Eagles saw the deficit stay at two, before York went on an 8-0 run to increase the lead to 26-16 late in the half.

The Eagles ended the half on a 5-0 run of their own to trail 26-21 going into the locker rooms. Comden paced the Eagles in the first half with six points, chipping in four boards and three blocks.

York came out of the break and put together a 5-0 run to get the lead back to ten, at 31-21. From there, the Spartans never saw the lead dip below 15 points. The game went back and forth from there.

Mary Washington finished the contest shooting 20.3% (13-64) from the field, and 50% (9-18) from the charity stripe. Diop paced the Eagles with nine points, along with 11 rebounds and two assists. Comden and Partonen each added six points a piece. Comden also finished with four boards and three blocks, while Partonen added two assists and two steals.

The Eagles return to action on Monday, January 6th. The women travel to Bridgewater for a contest scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
