UMW Women's Basketball Tops Widener, 61-55, in San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico-- Senior guard Sam Partonen scored 16 points in leading three players in double figures as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Widener University, 61-55, on Thursday in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Eagles improve to 6-2 on the season.

The Eagles trailed, 31-30, at intermission, but charged back for the win. UMW outscored Widner 31-24 in the second half. Partonen made five field goals, including three three-pointers, and also grabbed four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Classmate Aby Diop scored 13 points on 6-7 shooting and added five rebounds and two assists. Freshman Brianne Comden had 10 points on 5-10 shooting. Sarah Listenbee added eight points on 3-5 shooting, and was 2-3 from the free throw line.

Mary Washington shot 44.6% from the field (25-56), including 8-17 from the charity stripe. The Eagles held Widner to just 39.2% shooting (20-51) and 5-17 from the three point line. Although the Eagles got outrebounded 43 to 28, UMW forced 19 Widner turnovers in the win. 

The Eagles will face Alvernia University today at 5:00 p.m. eastern local time.
