Frostburg, Md.-- The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Frostburg State University, 85-53, on Wednesday. Sophomore Sarah Listenbee led the way with 15 points for the Eagles, which saw four players hit double digits. The win moves Mary Washington to 4-1, 1-0 CAC on the year.
UMW jumped out the gates early, with a Brianne Comden layup, and a couple of Sam Partonen free throws. Frostburg came back to tie the game at 4-4, in what was a back and forth game at the start.
The Eagles used a big run to regain the lead at 30-22. Led by seven big points by Listenbee, as part of a 10-6 run, the Eagles forced a Bobcat timeout leading 40-28. UMW closed the half on 7-2 run to take a 47-30 lead into the locker rooms.
Mary Washington shot 37.5% from the field in the opening half, including 50% from the the three point arc. Aubrey Howland had 12 points in the first half, along with five rebounds to pace the Eagles.
Frostburg tried to cut into the lead following the break, but the Eagles never looked back. An Erin Drumheller layup capped 14-8 midway through the second half to give UMW a 61-38 advantage. Claire Haeuptle drilled a three pointer to put the game away for good with 6:00 minutes remaining at 75-49.
The Eagles closed out the game, winning 85-53 to improve to 4-1, 1-0 CAC on the year. Listenbee led the way with 15 points, along with six rebounds. Senior Sam Partonen chipped in a full stat line with 12 points, six boards and five assists. Comden and Howland ended up with 11 and 14 points respectively. From the floor the Eagles shot 40.5%, while holding Frostburg to only 28.1% shooting.
"Good all around team effort", said UMW head coach Deena Applebury. "We shared the ball and limited our turnovers."
UMW returns to action on Saturday, December 7th, when they travel to Marymount (Va.) for a CAC showdown. The game with the Saints tips off at 2:00 p.m.
