Eagles Soar Past Shenandoah, 70-28, on Tuesday

Winchester, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Shenandoah 70-28 on Tuesday evening. The Eagles used a 31-3 first half advantage to put the Hornets away early. Freshman Brianne Comden poured in a team high 18 points to lead the Eagles, and senior guard Sam Partonen added 13 points and ten rebounds. 

The Eagles came out of the gates with a Partonen three, just ten seconds into the contest to set the tone for the game. UMW jumped out to a 21-1 lead before Imani Heggens hit a jumper to make it 21-3. Heggens scored all three points for the Hornets in the first half. 

Comden opened the second half with three of the Eagles' first four baskets to up the lead to 39-3. Senior Aby Diop scored five straight UMW points to move the lead to 46-12. Coach Applebury would substitute freely in the second half, as 12 UMW players reached the scoring column.

Comden led the way with 18 points, upping her average to 15 per game. Partonen added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles, while also posting two assists and three steals. Sarah Listenbee chipped in seven points for Mary Washington, who shot 47.5% from the field for the game, while holding Shenandoah to only 23.4% for the game. 

The Eagles return to action Wednesday, December 4th. UMW travels to Western Maryland to face CAC foe Frostburg St. beginning at 6:00 p.m.
