Comden Leads UMW Women to 60-53 Defeat of Cortland, Hampton Inn South Tipoff Tournament Title

Fredericksburg, Va-- The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Cortland St. 60-53 in the championship of the Hampton Inn South Tipoff Tournament. The Eagles were paced by freshman Brianne Comden's 20 point performance. The win moves the Eagles to 2-0 on the year.

Sam Partonen got the scoring started with a three pointer, just seconds into the game. It was then Cortland's turn to go on the offensive, putting together a 5-0 run, to give them the lead at 13-9. From there, the game went back and forth with each team exchanging buckets. Cortland retained a three point lead throughout. The Eagles made a push late, going on a 5-0 spurt to take the lead into the half at 26-24. Partonen led all scorers in the first half with eight points.

The second stanza saw the Eagles bust out of the gate, going on a 12-0 thanks in part to Comden's nine points. The run was capped by a Claire Haeuptle three, giving the Eagles a 38-24 lead. The Eagles once again exchanged buckets with the Red Dragons, holding at least a ten point lead throught the half. Cortland made a run late, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles held on for the win, 60-53. 

Comden led all scorers with 20. She also added three rebounds for the winners. Aubrey Howland recorded yet another double-double, this time with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Howland was named Tournament MOP, while Comden was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Eagles return to action on November 19th. UMW travels to Randolph-Macon for a game starting at 6:00 p.m.
