Partonen Named to VaSID All-State Women's Basketball Team

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its 2012-13 All-State Women’s Basketball College Division squads, and Marymount University senior Katelyn Fischer (Reisterstown, Md.) was voted as the State Player of the Year. Randolph-Macon College first-year guard Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va.) earned VaSID Rookie of the Year accolades, while Christopher Newport University first-year head boss Bill Broderick took home Coach of the Year honors.

                Fischer was voted as a WBCA All-American Honorable Mention following a senior campaign that saw her average 16.4 points per game, nailing 42 percent (58-138) from downtown on the season. She dished out 155 assists and also played over 38 minutes a game for the Saints.

                The Marymount star was named as the D3hoops.com Atlantic Region Player of the Year, along with earning D3hoops.com All-American Third Team honors and CapitalOne/CoSIDA Academic All-American First Team laurels. She helped lead her team to a Capital Athletic Conference regular and tournament championship, as the Saints appeared in the NCAA Tournament this year. 

                Anderson had a stellar first season with the Yellow Jackets, as she was honored by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) as the league’s Rookie of the Year. She earned All-ODAC Second Team after leading Randolph-Macon in scoring, pouring in over 14 points per game. She was effective on the glass, corralling 6.7 boards, and finished sixth in the league in points per game and eighth in steals with 49.

                Broderick posted on of the finest seasons in NCAA Division III history for a first-year head coach, going 29-3 and leading the Captains to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance. He helped guide Christopher Newport to its 11th USA South Conference title, along with finishing the season with the No. 6 ranking in the end-of-year D3hoops.com Top 25 rankings.

                Joining Fischer on the VaSID All-State First Team was Hollins University senior guard Jasmine Greene (Hampton, Va.), Lynchburg College sophomore guard/forward Shannon Allan (Warwick, N.Y.), Bridgewater senior guard Jessica Mullen (Purcellville, Va.) and Christopher Newport junior guard Tia Perry (Goldsboro, N.C.).

                The VaSID College Division Second Team consisted of Eastern Mennonite University junior forward Bianca Ygarza (Conestoga, Penn.), University of Mary Washington junior guard Sam Partonen (Burke, Va.), Roanoke College sophomore forward Paxton Gwin (Buxton, N.C.), Ferrum College senior guard Tesla Akers (Princeton, W.V.) and Bluefield College junior guard Tequila McNeal (Columbia, S.C.).

                The two teams were consisted of members from 10 schools, as no institution had more than one member honored on the two squads. CNU did pick up two awards, with Broderick earning head mentor honors and Perry picking up a spot on the first team.

                VaSID is comprised of sports information or athletics communications professionals from intercollegiate institutions throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Membership is open to any individual affiliated with one of the state’s institutions at the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, community college and independent levels, provided that individual’s area of responsibility lies within the realm of sports information.
