Junior guard Sam Partonen scored a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 74-60 win at Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Eagles improve to 10-5 overall, and into a first place tie in the Capital Athletic Conference standings, as four teams now stand with one loss.

The Eagles jumped ahead early on Saturday, holding a slim 8-6 lead with 15:39 remaining. A Carol Dye layup and a pair of three pointers from Partonen and Amanda Witmer quickly pushed the lead to 16-6, and a layup form Brieneke Matthes and five straight points from sophomore Claire Haeuptle ran the scoring run to 15-0, giving the Eagles a 23-6 lead with 9:30 to go. Salisbury used three straight jumpers from Julia McLaughlin to spur a run cutting the deficit to just six at 27-21, but the Eagles worked the lead back to 11 by halftime on a Matthes three pointer.

Salisbury was able to get back into the game with a run starting the second half, making 9-10 free throws to cut the deficit to 44-43 midway through the half. After fourpoints from Aubrey Howland and a basket from Aby Diop, UMW led by seven, only to see the Sea Gulls cut the deficit back to one at 50-49 with 7:05 left.

From that point, Partonen scored eight of the Eagles' next 10 points, and scored six in a run that saw UMW leading, 64-53, with 2:17 remaining. The Eagles sank 9-10 free throws down the stretch for the 74-60 win.

Partonen went 6-12 from the floor, including 3-6 on long range attempts, and added 10 rebounds and five assists. Carol Dye had 12 points, eight rebounds and five asissts, and Howland added 10 points and five boards. UMW shot 50% form the floor (27-54), and went 7-12 on three-point shooting. The Eagles won the battle of rebounding, 44-31, and limited Salisbury to 28% shooting (18-63).

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host St. Mary's College in another CAC contest at 6:00 p.m.
