UMW Women's Basketball Tops Wilkes, 52-34, in Cruzin Classic

Junior forward Aby Diop scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 52-34 victory over Wilkes University on Tuesday as part of the Cruzin Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Eagles improve to 7-3 on the season.

UMW started strong defensively, allowing Wilkes just 13 first half points. In the second half, the Eagles outscored Wilkes, 30-21.

Diop went 4-8 from the floor and 6-7 from the free throw line in 26 minutes for her 14 points. Junior forward Aubrey Howland and freshman center Caitie Geohegan each had 10 rebounds to lead UMW, who held a 54-44 advantage on the boards in the game, and forced 18 Wilkes turnovers.

Senior center Carol Dye had nine points and junior guard Sam Partonen added eight in the victory. Mary Washington, despite shooting just 27% from the floor in the game, limited Wilkes to only 20% from the floor.

The Eagles will face Hartwick College on Wednesday at noon in Fort Lauderdale as part of the Cruzin Classic.
