UMW Women's Basketball Falls at CNU, 51-40

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 51-40 decision at undefeated Christopher Newport University on Saturday night in Newport News, Va. With the loss, the Eagles drop to 6-3 on the season.

In a strong defensive effort by both teams, the two offenses struggled to score, and combined to shoot just 33-110 from the floor. The Captains held a 22-11 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the offenses awoke after each team had taken nine days off for final exams, as each team scored 29 points. UMW was able to close the gap to as few as five, at 45-40, inside of three minutes remaining, but could draw no closer.

Senior center Carol Dye led the Eagles with 11 points and five rebounds, while Sam Partonen had nine points and four assists, and Caitlin Ciniero added eight points. Camry Green had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Captains.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, when they face Wilkes University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. at 10:00 a.m.
