Partonen's 25 Points Leads #13 UMW Women's Basketball Past N.C. Wesleyan, 58-48

Junior guard Sam Partonen scored a career high with 25 points to lead the 13th-ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 58-48 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College on Sunday in Fayetteville, N.C.

The Eagles forged an early lead, scoring the first six points and leading, 9-3, after a Partonen three pointer with 17:18 remaining. The Eagles led by 10 at 25-15 with 8:46 to go, but the Bishops closed the half on a 12-4 run to cut the Eagles' advantage to two, at 29-27, at intermission.

The Bishops started the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 33-29 lead, but UMW answered with three points each from Partonen and Aubrey Howland to regain the lead at 41-37 with 10:59 to go. A big three pointer from Partonen with 6:56 left gave UMW a six-point lead, and another Partonen triple with 3:08 left lifted UMW's lead to eight at 50-42.

After the Bishops cut the deficit to two at 50-48 with 1:30 remaining, Howland made a layup and went 4-4 from the free throw line to ensure victory.

Partonen was 9-16 from the floor, making 3-4 three point attempts, and went 4-4 from the free throw line. Howland scored 13 points including six in the final 1:30. Diop scorted nine points and hauled in 14 rebounds in gaining all-tournament team honors.

Mary Washington will return to action on Thursday when the Eagles host Washington & Lee University at 7:00 p.m.
