Freshman forward Aubrey Howland has been a key contributor all season for the University of Mary Washington Eagles. In Saturday's victory over Salisbury University at the William M. Anderson Center, Howland took charge and was the main contributor in the 52-23 triumph. The freshman threw in 11 points and had nine rebounds, both game highs for the Eagles, as they push their record to 21-0 (12-0 conference) on the season.
Mary Washington used another strong effort on defense to force the visiting Seagulls into 30 turnovers and only 17% field-goal percentage in the game. The 23 points given up was the lowest total of the season for the Eagles' defense, which leads Division III allowing only 40.1 points per game. The solid defensive performance was just what the Eagles needed, as their offense hit on only 1-13 from behind the arc and struggled to find a rythym for much of the game.
Senior guard Katie Wimmer had 10 points for Mary Washington, joining Howland as the only two Eagles to finish in double figures. Senior forward Claire Brooks added eight points and eight rebounds off the bench, helping Mary Washington to a 45-34 advantage on the boards for the game.
Guard Anna Hackett led the Sea Gulls with five points, while four other Salisbury players added four points a piece. Forwards Nicole Sisco and Whitney Kolakowski paced the Sea Gulls, who fall to 11-9 (8-4 conference) on the season, with six rebounds each.
Mary Washington will be in action again Wednesday evening as they travel to Hood College for a Capital Athletic Conference match-up at 6 PM.
