UMW Women's Basketball Falls to Marymount at Buzzer, 53-52

Marymount senior Amanda Billy hit her fifth three pointer of the second half as the final buzzer sopunded to give Marymount University a 53-52 victory over the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles fall to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in CAC play.

Mary Washington built a nine-point advantage at halftime, at 25-16, thanks to 40% shooting from the floor and limiting the Saints to 29.4% shooting. But the Saints chipped away and led by as many as seven points late, thanks to 50% shooting, including Billy's long-range shooting. 

The Eagles erased a five point deficit with 4:16 to play, as Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton) made a layup and a three pointer with 2:08 to play. Freshman Aby Diop gave the Eagles the lead at 52-50 with 38 seconds remaining, and the Saints turned the ball over to give UMW possession. The Eagles were able to run the clock all the way down to 10 seconds before being fouled. After a missed attempt, Marymount proceeded downcourt and the ball was deflected out of bounds with 1.8 seconds left.

After the Saints called timeout, Billy hit a three pointer at the top of the arc as the final horn sounded, giving MU the win. Billy led the Saints with 17 points, and Maame Amponsah added 15 points and 15 rebounds. Martin was the lone Eagle in double figures with 15 points to go with five rebounds and four steals.

Mary Washington will visit Lehman College on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
