Junior guard Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) scored a team-high 13 points in 19 minutes of action to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 54-41 win over Stevenson University on Wednesday night at Goolrick Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The Eagles played outstanding defense in the first half to build a large lead, limiting the Mustangs to just eight first half points on 4-1 shooting (19%). Wimmer led the way with 10 points in 10 minutes in the first frame.
Wimmer was the Eagles' lone scorer in double figures, but freshman guard Sam Partonen (Burke, Va., Robinson) and junior guard Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton) each scored eight points, and post players Katie Maksanty (Woodbridge, Va., Woodbridge) and Lauren Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) each added six.
The Eagles held a 45-42 rebounding edge, and caused 22 Stevenson turnovers. Stevenson was led by Jaquelia Conley's game-high 15 points.
Mary Washington will visit Frostburg State University on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in another CAC contest.
