UMW Women's Basketball Tops Wesley to Move to 20-5

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team allowed just 11 first half points in topping Wesley College, 61-48, on Saturday in both teams' regular season finale. The Eagles were led by junior guards Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) and Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison), who each scored 18 points.

The Eagles used a strong defensive effort in building a 32-11 halftime advantage, as Wesley went just 4-23 from the floor, while UMW shot 45.2%. The Eagles stretched the second half lead to as many as 29 points at 49-20, before Wesley got hot from three point range, making seven long range attempts.

McRae shot 8-11 from the floor and added six rebounds and three steals. Wimmer was 8-12 and had three rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Sophomore center Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) had 10 points and freshman Aby Diop (Springfield, Va., Annandale) grabbed nine rebounds for UMW, and Sam Partonen (Burke, Va., Robinson) added eight assists and five rebounds.

Mary Washington will host a Capital Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal on Thursday against either Frostburg State University or Wesley at 7:00 p.m.
