Junior guards Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison), Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale), and Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton) combined to score 44 points as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team topped visiting Frostburg State University, 71-53, on Saturday at Goolrick Gymnasium. UMW, winners of six straight, improve to 12-5 overall, and 8-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The Eagles gained control early, taking a 14-2 lead in the opening six minutes, with McRae, Wimmer, and Martin scoring all of UMW's points. The Eagles were able to up the lead to as many as 23 in the first half before settling with a 38-22 halftime advantage.
The second half saw Frostburg cut the deficit to as few as 12 on two occasions, but the Eagles shot 52% from the floor in the second half to keep the lead in double figures, eventually ending with the 18-point win.
Wimmer made 6-12 field goals to lead the way with 16 points, while McRae scored 15 and added nine rebounds. Martin scored 13 and had a team-high five assists. Frostburg was led by El;aina Hummel and Elizabeth Carrington, who each scored 14.
UMW shot 50% from the floor for the game (26-52), with 10 three pointers, and made 9-12 free throws. The Bobcats shot 37% (20-54) with four long range baskets.
The Eagles will visit Marymount University, their lone loss in CAC play, on Wednesday night in Arlington at 6:00 p.m.
