UMW Women's Basketball Turns Up D, Tops Hood, 53-23

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team trailed by as many as seven points in the first half but then held Hood College scoreless for 20 minutes and nine seconds in topping the Blazers, 53-23, on Wednesday night in Capital Athletic Conference action. UMW improves to 11-5 overall and 7-1 in CAC play.

The Eagles trailed, 17-10, with 9:31 to play in the first half, as Hood made five of its first nine shots. After a timeout, the Eagles closed the first half on an 8-0 run, and continued the run after halftime until 9:22 was left on the clock, when the run reached 26 straight points. The Blazers went 1-22 from the floor during the stretch, and made just one field goal in the second half.

Junior guard Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) made 7-11 field goals to score 15 points for the Eagles, while freshman Aby Diop (Springfield, Va., Annandale) connected on all five her shots to post 10. Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) had nine points, six assists, and five rebounds, UMW won the rebounding battle, 41-37, and forced 24 Hood turnovers while committing just 10.

Brianna White had six points to lead Hood, while reigning CAC Player of the Week Allyson Lethbridge and Emily Maerz each scored five.

Mary Washington will host Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
