The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead thanks to a hot start, but failed to shoot well in a 68-47 loss at seventh-ranked Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon at the Freeman Center. The Eagles fall to 6-5 on the year.
The Eagles made their first three three-pointers and their first six free throws to hold a 12-8 lead early, but score less than ten points in the final 10 minutes of the first half in trailing, 30-21, at intermission. UMW shot just 18% from the floor in the first half, making five field goals, and then shot 29% in the second half, as the Captains upped the lead to 20 points.
Mary Washington was led by Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton)'s 15 points on 5-9 shooting, including three three-pointers. Junior Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) added 12 points, including seven from the free throw line.
The Eagles will host Salisbury University on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in Capital Athletic Conference action.
