UMW Women's Basketball Falls at #7 Kean, 78-63


The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 78-63 decision at seventh-ranked Kean University on Thursday night, falling to 5-2 on the season.

The young Eagles hung around for much of the first half, and trailed by eight, 35-27, at halftime. Kean, who made 10 of 17 three point attempts in the game, opened the second half on a tear, extending the lead to as many as 27 before the Eagles made a run to cut the final deficit to 15.

Sophomore guard Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) led Mary Washington with 15 points, including a 10-10 performance from the free throw line. Classmate Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles. Sophomores Lauren Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) and Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton) each had eight points. Kean was led by Melissa Beyruti's 21 points.

The Eagles shot 35% from the floor, while Kean shot 45%. The Eagles did make 24-29 free throws in the contest. The Eagles committed 22 turnovers, Kean had 20.

Mary Washington will take on Clarkson University in Daytona, Fla., on December 29 at 10:00 a.m.
