BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds in gaining tournament Most Valuable Player honors to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 54-49 win at Johns Hopkins University on Sunday in the championship game of the Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Blue Jays fall to 1-1.

The first half saw the lead change hands several times, as the Eagles jumped ahead early, but Hopkins responded with a 10-0 run to take a 19-10 advantage with 9:08 remaining. UMW responded with an 11-0 run to go up, 21-19, with 4:45 to play in the half. All-tournament selection sophomore Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) (11 points) keyed the run with a pair of three pointers. With the score tied at 23, UMW scored six straight, including five from Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton), and the Eagles led, 29-28, at intermission.

An 8-0 run by Mary Washington to open the second half over the first seven minutes put the Eagles up for good. Wimmer and McRae provided all the scoring in the run. UMW kept the lead at at least two posessions for the remainder of the game, as the Blue Jays cut the final deficit to five, at 54-49.

In addition to McRae's 14 points and Wimmer's 11, sophomore Lauren Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run), who was also named to the all-tournament team, added 10 points for the Eagles. Johns Hopkins was led by Lyndsay Burton and Leslie Markun, who each scored seven. Mary Washington shot 44% from the floor for the game, while limiting Johns Hopkins to 32%. The Eagles have allowed 55 points or less in each of their first three games.

Mary Washington will visit Shenandoah University on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
