UMW Women's Basketball Opens With 64-55 Win at Washington & Lee

LEXINGTON, VA - The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team used a balanced effort and a 9-0 late run to defeat Washington & Lee University, 64-55, on Tuesday night in Lexington, Va. The Eagles saw sophomore Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) score 14 points and add seven rebounds to lead the team in both categories, while sophomore Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) scored 13 points and sophomore Claire Brooks (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) added 11 points and five boards.

The Eagles fell behind early, and trailed by as many as eight with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.UMW steadily climbed back with two baskets from Brooks and three pointers from Kate Vennergrund (Centreville, Va., Centreville) and Wimmer to claim a one-point halftime lead, 30-29.

Mary Washington settled down offensively, commiting 10 turnovers in the final 33 minutes after registering seven in the first seven minutes. UMW held a slim lead throughout the first 12 minutes of the second half, but the Generals hung tough, tying the score at 45 with 8:04 remaining.

A three pointer by Wimmer kick-started a 9-0 run for UMW with 5:58 to play with a span of 2:03 to take a 58-47 advantage, posting five points in the run. The Eagles held as much as a 12 point lead, winning by nine in the end, 64-55.

The Eagles will take on Richard Stockton College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the Johns Hopkins University Tipoff Tournament.
