#24 UMW Women's Basketball Tops Hood, 71-41, in CAC Play


The 24th-ranked University of Mary Washington women’s basketball team overcame a rocky shooting performance in the first half to defeat Capital Athletic Conference foe Hood College, 71-41, on Friday night at Goolrick Gymnasium. The Eagles remain unbeaten in CAC play at 12-0, and move to 17-3 overall, and move their win streak to 11 straight.

After more than a week’s layoff, the Eagles showed their rust offensively in the first frame, shooting 10-37 from the field (27%). UMW turned up the pressure defensively, forcing 32 Hood turnovers, and improved offensively in the second frame with 43 points via 43% shooting for the 30-point win. Senior guard Ashley Reed (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) led the Eagles with 15 points, while sophomore Lauren Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) added 10 off the bench for UMW. Hood was led by Dyanna Prater’s 10 points.

The Blazers hung tough in the first half, leading 19-17 with 4:40 left in the half. UMW closed the half on an 11-2 run to lead 28-21 at intermission. Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton) provided two buckets in the charge to lead the way.

The Eagles used a 9-0 run into the second half to put the lead at 48-30 with 13:12 left in the game. Reed’s three-point basket with 15:15 left started the run.

Freshman Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) and sophomore Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) each added eight points for UMW, while soph Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) added six points and nine rebounds. UMW outrebounded Hood, 47-35.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit York College at 4:00 p.m.
