UMW Women's Basketball Tops #5 Marymount, 65-57, To Remain Unbeaten in CAC Play

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team scored the first 20 points of the game, and limited fifth-ranked Marymount University to four first half field goals in a 65-57 victory over the Saints in a battle for first place in the Capital Athletic Conference standings. UMW improves to 11-3 overall and 6-0 in league play, while Marymount falls to 15-1 and 6-1.

The Eagles were led by sophomore guards Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) (18 points) and Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) (12 points), while Marymount was led by Amanda Billy's 17. 

Mary Washington held the Saints scoreless for the first 9:57 of the game, using baskets from six different players in the 20-0 run, and led, 24-5 with 8:18 in the half. Marymount responded by cutting the deficit to 26-15 with 2:58 to play, but the Eagles answered with the final eight points of the half to lead 34-15 at intermission. UMW shot 46% from the floor in the opening half, while holding Marymount to 19% (4-21).

In the second half, Marymount's offense awoke, and the Saints cut the Eagle lead to six twice in the closing minutes, but each time UMW responded big key baskets. UMW made 11-25 field goals in the second half, while Marymount shot 46%.

Freshman Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) added eight points, and sophomore Lauren Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) added eight points for UMW. Sophomore Claire Brooks (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) had three blocks and two steals. The Eagles outrebounded Marymount, 38-25, and made 15-16 free throws in the game, with Marymount making 20-27.

The Eagles will return to action on Monday night in another CAC contest at Salisbury University at 6:00 p.m.
