UMW Women's Basketball Tops Gallaudet, 45-36, to Remain Unbeaten in CAC Play

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team used a solid defensive effort in topping Gallaudet University, 45-36, on Saturday at Goolrick Gymnasium. The Eagles, 8-3 overall and 4-0 in CAC play, snap the Bison's five-game win streak.

Both teams struggled to score, as Gallaudet shot 25% for the game, making 18 points in each half, while the Eagles shot 26.6%. UMW's 19 offensive rebounds proved to pivotal in the nine-point win.

Mary Washington was led by sophomore Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison)'s 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Claire Brooks (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) also added eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton) scored seven points and added three steals for UMW. Gallaudet was led by Easter Faafiti's 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Eagles led, 22-18, at intermission, and Gallaudet was able to knot the score at 26 early in the second half. From there, the Eagles scored 11 straight points, including five from Wimmer, to take a 37-26 lead with 6:39 left. The Eagles pushed the lead to 13 points on two occasions before finishing with the nine-point win.

Mary Washington will host Randolph-Macon College on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
