STEVENSON, MD - Sophomore guard Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) scored a game-high 16 points, and Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) and Kate Vennergrund (Centreville, Va., Centreville) each added nine as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team topped Stevenson University, 50-27, on Wednesday night in Capital Athletic Conference play. The Eagles move to 3-0 in league play, and 7-3 overall.
The Eagles led from the outset, holding a 26-15 halftime advantage. UMW used a 9-0 run at the start of the second half to pull ahead, 37-17, and never looked back. The Eagles limited the Mustangs to 21% shooting from the floor and forced 23 Stevenson turnovers.
Mary Washington, who saw 10 players play at least 10 minutes, shot just 30% from the floor, but outrebounded Stevenson, 48-42. Freshman Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) led UMW with seven rebounds. The Eagles garnered 18 offensive boards.
Stevenson was led by Kristen Steiner's 10 points.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Gallaudet University at 1:00 p.m. in another CAC game.
