UMW Men's Track & Field Finishes Second at CNU Blue/Gray Invitational; Women Take Fourth

The University of Mary Washington men's outdoor track and field team finished just one point out of first place, while the women finished in fourth place on Saturday at the Christopher Newport University Blue/Gray Invitational.

For the men, who finished with 134 points, just one off of Virginia Wesleyan's 135, saw victories from Ripken Smith in the shot put at 43 feet, 9.25 inches as well as in the discus at 137 feet, nine inches. He also took second in the hammer throw at 159 feet, 10 inches. Other top performances from the men included David Danek taking first in the high jump at six feet, six inches, Daniel Lee taking second in the javelin at 148 feet, two inches; Bryce McAlpine finishing first in the 400 meter hurdles at 57.92 seconds; and the 4x400 meter relay of Chris Hall, Andrew South, Alec Biles, and Laurence Sneed which took first at 3:25.97.

The women saw Yamina James finish second in the pole vault at 10 feet, six inches; Jean Woodrum take second in the hammer throw at 132 feet, eight inches, and third in the discus at 119 feet, nine inches; Jackie Smith took second in the javelin throw at 106 feet, 10 inches; Ashley Applegate was second in the steeplechase at 12:21.50; and Emily Knerr was first in the 1500 meters at 4:50.00.

The Eagles will compete at the Colonial Relays as well as host the Battleground Relays next weekend.
