UMW Women's Outdoor Track & Field Takes Third at CAC Championships; Men Place Fifth

The University of Mary Washington track and field teams competed at day two of the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Championships on Sunday in York, Pa., with several all-conference performances. The women finished in third place, less than two points out of second, while the men finished fifth.

The women finished with 124 points, which stood 24 points behind first place Christopher Newport and 1.16 behind second place Salisbury. Wesley gained 107.5 points, with York following with 70, Frostburg 41, and Penn State-Harrisburg 4.5.

On Sunday, the Eagles gained a trio of conference champions, as junior Taylor Cockerille won the discus with a throw of 134 feet, while teammate Sheree Turner took second at 126 feet. Freshman Janel Moore took first in the 100 meter finals with a time of 12.38 seconds, and Moore also took second in the 200 meters with a time of 25.82. Turner won the hammer throw with a toss of 151 feet, 11 inches, while Elysa Baker took third at 138 feet, five inches.

Samantha Park was third in the 3000 steeplechase at 12:02.53, Rachel Lewis took second in the 1500 meters at 4:49.8 and second in the 800 meters at 2:20.76, and Lauren Braney finished third in the 5000 meters at 19:32.71. The 4x400 meter relay of Claire Harrington, Moore, Kelsey Carter, and Lewis finished third at 4:02.73.

The men placed fifth with 54 points, behind first place Salisbury (199.5), CNU (132.5), Wesley (100), and York (80).

Freshman Nick Smith took second in the long jump on Sunday, with a leap of 22 feet, 10 inches; Chris Markham finished third in the 3000 steeplechase at 10:02.19. Ben Sorensen took second in the 5000 meters at 15:51.34.

UMW will continue to have competitors participate in last chance meets with the hopes of having advancement to the NCAA Championships in several weeks. All-CAC awards will be announced this week.
