UMW Men's, Women's Track & Field Open Strong at CAC Championships in Day One

The University of Mary Washington men's and women's track and field teams started strongly on day one of the Capital Athletic Conference Championships, with several top-three finishes.

The day was highlighted by senior Claire Harrington, who finished first in the pole vault with a leap of 11 feet, 6.5 inches with a new conference and school record. Other highlights for the women included Sheree Turner taking second in the shot put at 41 feet, 2.5 inches, and Taylor Cockerille taking third in the shot at 41 feet, one inch.

On the track, Janel Moore finished second in the prelims of the 100 meters at 12.18 seconds, a new school record, and fourth in the prelims of the 200 meters at 25.55. Senior Tara Landy finished third in the 10,000 meters at 41:38.

The men saw Frank Corona finish third in the javelin at 169 feet, 10 inches, Glenn Taylor qualify in the 100 meter prelims in second at 10.73, and Kevin Jones take fifth in the 10,000 meters at 35:02.

The championships will continue on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
