Natalie Young Named CAC Women's Track Athlete of the Year; Glenn Taylor Nabs Men's Rookie of the Year as All-CAC Teams Released

Freshman Natalie Young won the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year, and classmate Glenn Taylor won the men's Rookie of the Year, as All-CAC Track and Field teams were announced on Thursday. UMW head coach Stan Soper claimed the women's Coach of the Year as well.

WOMEN

 YORK, Pa. - Mary Washington freshman distance runner Natalie Young, who secured two gold medals at the conference championship meet, was chosen by the CAC coaches as the 2014 CAC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Ath­lete of the Year.

Young, who took top honors in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, becomes the 12th Mary Washington student-athlete and first since 2008 to receive CAC Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors in the 21-year history of the award.

Christopher Newport freshman Logan Harrington was named the 2014 CAC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year after earning two golds and a silver to help lead the Captains to the team title. Harrington finished first in the 800 meters, second in the 1,500 and also anchored the winning 4x400 relay team.

Mary Washington’s Stan Soper was honored by his peers as the 2014 CAC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year. This marks the 15th time that Soper has received the accolade.

Christopher Newport placed a conference-best 17 athletes on the All-CAC team, with seven first-team selections and 10 second team nods. Junior Enuma Ezenwa posted three gold-medal finishes and one silver to lead the way for the Captains, taking first in the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and 4x400 relay, and grabbing second in the 4x100 relay.

In addition to Ezenwa and Harrington, several other Captains earned multiple All-CAC honors. Joining Ezenwa and Harrington on the winning 4x400 relay team were sophomore Jennifer Westerholm and senior Jessica McClel­land. Individually, Westerholm and McClelland each nabbed first and second-place finishes at the championship meet. Westerholm secured first-team honors in the triple jump and second team in the 400 hurdles, while McClelland won the 1,500 and placed second in the 800. Junior Leah Richardson posted the other top finish for the Captains, winning the 400 meters to earn first-team accolades.

Additional Captains making their way onto the all-conference second team included sophomore Deanna Corts in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, freshman Emmie Schmitt in the 10,000, Madison Bloxom in the javelin, Jenna Elliott in the high jump, and junior Danielle Crowley in both the long jump and triple jump. The 4x100 relay squad of Ezenwa, Richardson, Crowley and junior Caitlyn Pabst also garnered second-team all-star recognition.

Young paced a group of six first-team recipients for Mary Washington. Junior Claire Harrington won the pole vault for the second straight year to pick up her third career All-CAC award in the event, while junior Cheyenne Falls captured the shot put title after placing second at the 2013 championships. Sophomore Elysa Baker (hammer) and fresh­man Sheree Turner (discus) also grabbed first-team honors for UMW.

Landing on the second team for the Eagles were senior Liz Green in the 5,000 and sophomore Taylor Cockerille in the discus throw.

Salisbury captured a pair of first-team All-CAC awards and had six on the second team. Sophomore Shannon Gilligan secured top honors in the javelin, while freshman Meghan McGowan claimed gold in the high jump. Senior Kara Tolson nabbed a trio of second-place finishes, becoming a four-time all-star in the 200 meters and a three-time recipient in the 100, while also contributing to a silver-medal finish in the 4x400 relay. Joining Tolson in the 4x400 were senior Alex Greissinger, sophomore Lauren Snyder and junior Ameera Teal. Other Sea Gulls to garner second-team awards included junior Ashley Reilly in the 100 hurdles, freshman Sarah Taylor in the pole vault and senior Sadie Man­gold in the hammer throw. Mangold earned All-CAC second-team honors for the second straight year.

Wesley freshman Elizsha Streeter, the 2014 CAC Indoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year, contributed to three of the Wolverines five All-CAC nods. Streeter claimed individual gold in the 200 meters and posted a second-place finish in the 400, while also teaming with fellow freshmen Kameko Webb, Angel Hall and Kiona Mency for top honors in the 4x100 relay. Mency secured first-team accolades with a gold in the 100 meters, while freshman Kadijah Doughty made her way onto the second team with a silver in the shot put.

York sophomore Jenna Roberts was the lone Spartan to receive All-CAC recognition after taking top honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Roberts was a second-team award winner in the event last spring.

Frostburg State also captured one first-team All-CAC award as junior Alexis Bush posted the top finish in the long jump for her first career all-star honor.

 

MEN

 

 YORK, Pa. - Salisbury sophomore Luke Campbell continues to add to his long list of accolades, as he was named the 2014 CAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year after collecting three gold medals and posting a pair of record-breaking performances at the championship meet.

Campbell recorded top individual finishes in the 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles, setting a new CAC record in the 110 and a new championship meet mark in the 400. He also anchored the 4x400 relay team to victory to grab his third gold of the meet. Campbell, the CAC Rookie of the Year at both the 2013 indoor and outdoor championship meets and the 2014 CAC Indoor Co-Athlete of the Year, is the 10th Salisbury student-athlete to receive Athlete of the Year recognition.

Mary Washington freshman Glenn Taylor took first place in the 200-meter dash and second in the 100 to earn 2014 CAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year accolades. Taylor is the fifth UMW student-athlete to receive the award and first since 2005.

Salisbury’s Jim Jones was chosen by his peers as the 2014 CAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year award. It is the third-straight year, and eighth time since 2004, that Jones has received the honor.

In addition to Campbell’s superb performance, Salisbury junior Dylan Burkett also took home multiple gold medals for the Sea Gulls. Burkett won the shot put for the second straight year and grabbed top honors in the discus fol­lowing second-place finishes in the event at the 2012 and 2013 championships.

Salisbury totaled 18 All-CAC selections, more than doubling the number of all-conference honorees from any oth­er team. Campbell and Burkett led a contingent of seven Sea Gulls on the All-CAC first team with their multiple individ­ual golds at the championship. The Gulls also claimed top honors in the 4x400 relay that included Campbell and juniors Devon Hopkins, Thomas Burke and Tyler Austin. For the second consecutive year, Austin captured gold in the 100-me­ter dash and took second in the 200, while Hopkins nabbed second-place marks in the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles and triple jump, and Burke placed second in the 800. The other Sea Gull landing on the All-CAC first team was Eric Wood in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Hopkins, Austin, Burke and Burkett earned second-team All-CAC honors along with junior George Martinez in the 1,500, junior Ryan DiPascale in the shot put, junior Jeff Jordan in the discus, sophomore Xavier Stinson in the high jump and freshman Jason White in the pole vault. Jordan and Stinson are both two-time All-CAC award winners.

Christopher Newport, which placed seven individuals and a relay team on the All-CAC squad, was paced by a pair of dual gold-medalists, senior Richard Roethel in the javelin and high jump, and sophomore Dominique Torres in the long jump and triple jump. Junior Robert Mayes captured in the individual title in the 400 meters to secure first-team accolades, while junior Samuel Martin also grabbed All-CAC first team honors in the 1,500. Torres, Mayes, Roethel and Troy Newcomer earned second team honors in the 4x100 relay, while junior Daniel Richard placed second for the Cap­tains in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

With Rookie of the Year Taylor leading the way, Mary Washington placed two athletes on the All-CAC first team and four on the second team. Junior Nick Judy captured first team accolades by winning the pole vault for the second straight year. Eagles earning second team honors included senior Sean Healy in the 5,000 and 10,000 along with fresh­man Zach Kerns in the 400.

Wesley junior Carlton Sheppard captured the individual crown and All-CAC first team accolades in the 800 me­ters, while the Wolverines’ 4x100 relay squad of freshmen Patrick Schlosser, DaJahn Lowery, Johnny Crenshaw and Markael Jenkins also nabbed first team honors. Schlosser and Sheppard also teamed with freshmen Anthony Brinkley and Evan Le’Mon to post a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay. Freshman Vidal Adams earned an All-CAC second team nod with a silver-medal placing in the long jump.

York senior Tim Hartung, the 2013 Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year and the Co-Athlete of the Year at the 2014 Indoor Championships, captured a pair of individual golds to pace the Spartans. Hartung secured a top placing in the 5,000 meters for the third straight year, and won the 10,000 for the second straight year and third time in his career. Also earning All-CAC recognition for the Spartans was sophomore Robert Doster, who grabbed second in the javelin throw.

Frostburg State senior Robert Davis III recorded the lone All-CAC finish for the Bobcats, winning the hammer throw for the second consecutive year.
