2011 UMW Men's Track and Field in Review

2011 UMW Men's Track and Field in Review
The Eagle men’s track and field team opened the season indoors in the heart of winter and saw the season conclude in May. Along the way, UMW surpassed several school records, and just missed out on second place at the Capital Athletic Conference championships.

UMW opened the indoor season in January at the Father Diamond Invitational at George Mason, followed by meets to open the spring at the University of Maryland and Liberty University. Senior thrower Matt Geller and hurdler Dalton Eachard turned in numerous performances, as Eachard broke the school record in the 60 meter hurdles late in the year at the George Mason Invitational.

With the beginning of outdoor season in March, the Eagles started the proceedings by hosting the annual Battleground Relays, and saw sophomore Sean Healy take first place honors in the 5000 meters to head the highlights. The following week at the Washington & Lee/VMI Carnival, Sean Herlihy took fourth in the javelin, and Geller added two top-five throws.

The following week at York, the Eagles took second place, led by Geller’s wins in the discus and hammer throw, Phil Wahlman in the 800 meters, and a rare 1-2-3-4-5 finish in the 1500 meters, won by Scott Plunkett. At Lynchburg one week later, Scott Matthiessen began his late season charge with a top finish in the 400 meters, and Chris Marino won the 3000 steeplechase.

The Eagles then finished third at the CAC Championships, with Plunkett winning the 1500 meters and Nathaniel Saint-Preux winning the triple jump. UMW closed the season with meets at the Mason Dixon Championships, Liberty University and Swarthmore College. While no athletes qualified for NCAA Championship competition, several attained season- and personal-best marks late in the year.
