UMW Track & Field Hosts Battleground Relays

The University of Mary Washington men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened the 2010 season at home at the Battleground Relays this weekend, with many top results.

The Eagle men saw victories from junior Matt Geller (Huntington, N.Y., Harborfields) in the hammer throw (161 feet, one inch) and the shot put (45 feet, 11.75 inches), the 4x800 meter relay (Jason Driscoll (Haymarket, Va., Battlefield), Matt Cash (Fredericksburg, Va., Stafford)Bobby Tillett (Springfield, Va., West Springfield), Mo Yousuf (Alexandria, Va., Edison) - 7:56.14), Chris Marino (Portland, Conn., Portland) in the 300 meter steeplechase (10:03), the men's distance medley relay (Cash, Tillett, Yousuf, Driscoll - 10:23.14), and the 4x400 relay (Sean Herlihy (Afton, Va., Western Albemarle), Tillett, Driscoll, Cash - 3:30.01). 

The women received victories from LyneLynette Humphries (Staunton, Va., Riverheads) in the 100 meter hurdles (15.98), Michelle Sutherland (Norfolk, Va., Norfolk Academy) in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.52), Nicole Ditto (Richmond, Va., Mills Godwin) in the triple jump (36 feet, 0.75 inches), Amanda Zapata (Poolesville, Md., Poolesville) in the javelin (107 feet, eight inches), Chelsea LeHew (Williamsburg, Va., Lafayette) in the pole vault (nine feet), and Hannah Carloni (Branford, Conn., Branford) in the long jump (15 feet, 11.75 inches).

Winning Eagle relays included the 4x800 meter relay (Mara Cate (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac), Sutherland, Sarah Dawes (Chesapeake Beach, Md., Huntingtown), Kristy Witek (Fairfax, Va., Chantilly) - 9:57.95), the 4x100 meter relay (Carloni, Yun Lee (Falls Church, Va., Robinson), Ditto, and Alexandra McClellan (Portland, Me., Falmouth) - 51.76), the 4x200 meter relay (Bridget Dettmann (Charlottesville, Va., West Albemarle), Lee, Ditto, McClellan - 1:50.91), the distance medley relay (Dawes, Stacy Keser (Frederick, Md., Middletown), Michaela Sands (Burke, Va., Lake Braddock), Witek - 13:16.71), and the 4x400 relay (Ditto, Witek, Keser, Sutherland - 4:15.08).

The Eagles will compete at Towson University next Saturday.
