Mary Washington Softball Splits Doubleheader with Shenandoah

The Mary Washington softball team split its Wendesday afternoon doubleheader with Shenandoah in Winchester, Va.

Game 1 - Eagles win - 6-4

The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring a run apiece in the first and second inning. Emily Angel got the scoring started for the Eagles with a sac fly that scored Shelby Presgrave, and in the second, Brigid Ward singled home Kennedy Darling

The Hornets tied it in the bottom of the second, but the Eagles scored two more to take the lead in the fifth when Angel grounded out to third, scoring Presgrave. UMW stole a run on Angel's ground out when Aminah Shakir rounded third and took home on a fielding error by the Hornets' catcher.

Shenandoah tied it with a single in the fifth, then a homer in the sixth at four apiece, but it was Laychak's two-RBI go-ahead single in the seventh that plated a pair of runs and gave the lead back to UMW for good, 6-4.

In Game 1, Laychak went 3-for-4, while Shakir and Ward went 2-for-3 each. Caitlyn Burch picked up the win in relief as she picked up the final five outs in the victory.

Game 2 - Eagles lose - 3-0

UMW fell behind by three runs after Shenandoah scored all of their runs in the bottom of the third as Burch went all six in the Eagles' loss, striking out six batters.

Laychak recorded a pair of hits in three at-bats, while Hailee Danneker recorded two more for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will be back in action for the Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament, beginning on Friday, May 10.
