UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader with Methodist

The Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader with Methodist on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1 - Eagles lost - 4-2

After falling down by a run in the first, the Eagles would tie it in the second when Kennedy Darling reached on an error, allowing Abby Fielder to score.

Then, the Eagles took the lead in the fifth with Bridget Laychak's RBI single that scored Hannah Steele, giving UMW the 2-1 advantage.

But Methodist would counter with a run in the fifth to tie, then a pair in the sixth to take the lead.

Taylor Hudson was solid for the Eagles in the circle, yielding just two earned runs in 5.1 innings.

Game 2 - Eagles win - 7-4

Mary Washington got ahead early as it scored three runs in the top of the first when Emma Schieda doubled home all three runners to take a 3-0 lead. Methodist would then counter with a run in the bottom half.

In the third, the Eagles added two more runs when Emily Angel doubled a pair of runners home. Aminah Shakir doubled home another run in the fifth, giving UMW a 6-1 lead before Methodist countered with two runs in the fifth, then one in the sixth.

The Eagles would add another run in the seventh with Shakir's RBI single.

Caitlyn Burch pitched five innings, yielding two earned runs then Sydney Jester threw the final two innings for the Eagles.

Mary Washington is back in action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite.
