Mary Washington Softball Splits Doubleheader with Washington (Md.)

The Hannah Qualls era got off to a strong start on Friday afternoon as the head coach recorded her first win of her career in a 8-0 mercy run-ruled game over Washington College. The Eagles would later drop Game 2, 11-2, to the Shorewomen.

Caitlyn Burch shoved for the first four innings of Game 1, striking out seven in her four shutout innings of work before later shutting down Washington's offense in Game 2 for three shutout innings, in which she record three more strikeouts.

In Game 1, Mary Washington recorded nine hits as Emma Schieda led the Eagles with a pair of knocks. UMW would jump out to a 2-0 lead with a run in the second and third innings, before it put up six on Washington's bullpen in the sixth inning.

In the second, Schieda doubled to open the inning before Burch brought her home with an RBI single. In the third, Shelby Presgrave singled, then stole second, before Emily Angel scored her with a groundout.

Brooklynne James would replace Burch in the fourth, posting a pair of shutout innings before the Eagles' offense put the Shorewomen away in the sixth.

In the sixth, Bridget Laychak drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run of the inning, then James reached on an infield single to score the second run. Hailee Danneker would also draw another walk to drive in the third run in the sixth, while Hannah Steele drove in two more runs with a base hit. And finally, Angel drove a fly ball to the outfield, which was deep enough to score a run and end Game 1.

In Game 2, the Eagles fell behind by five in the first inning and couldn't quite recover. Washington added two more runs in the third before UMW countered with one as Presgrave drove in the run with a groundout. The Shorewomen would add a pair of runs in the fourth, while the Eagles scored another in the fifth.

In Game 2, Laychak, Danneker, Rayna Lloyd, Emma Dickson and Steele would all record base hits for UMW.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against WPI at 2 and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6.
