UMW Softball Falls to Christopher Newport, 4-0, in C2C Tourney 1st Round

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a 4-0 decision to Christopher Newport University on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles slip to 19-18 on the season.

UMW gained a single in the first from Erica Shoop, but was unable to score, and CNU scored a pair of runs in the second on a double, sacrifice, and a pair of Eagle errors. UMW threatened again in the third, as Aminah Shakir reached on an error before a single from Shelby Presgrave, but again were held off the scoreboard. The Captains used a double and sacrifice fly to add a third run in the third, and another in the fifth on a double and wild pitch.

Caitlyn Burch absorbed the loss after allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings. She struck out eight batters.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday in the tournament, and will face the loser of this afternoon's game between Salisbury and CNU at 11:00 a.m.
