UMW Softball Splits Friday DH with #2 Christopher Newport

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Friday Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at second-ranked Christopher Newport University, as the Eagles won the opener, 2-0, before falling in the nightcap, 13-0. UMW moves to 19-17 on the season.

In the opener, the game remained scoreless to the fifth, when Emma Schieda put the Eagles ahead with a solo home run. UMW added another run in the sixth on a solo homer from Aminah Shakir, and held on for the 2-0 win. 

In addition to Schieda and Shakir's home runs, Nya Lloyd posted a pair of hits in the seven-hit attack. Junior Caitlyn Burch gained the shut out win, allowing four hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out six.

In game two, the Captains scored six runs in the first and seven in the fourth in the shortened game. Shakir, Ashley Knoll, Abby Fielder, and Bridget Laychak collected hits for the Eagles, and Samantha Stuart absorbed the loss, allowing eight earned runs on five hits in three innings, with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit Mary Baldwin University in the regular season finale.
