UMW Softball Sweeps Marymount in Home Finale

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a Wednesday doubleheader from Marymount University at the Battleground, winning the opener, 4-1, and the second, 2-1. UMW improves to 18-14 on the season.

In the opener that saw Eagles pitcher Caitlyn Burch square off against her triplet sister Shanyn in the pitcher's circle, the game remained scoreless to the fourth. The Eagles broke ahead with three runs in the fourth, as Hannah Steele provided an RBI groundout with the bases loaded. Erica Shoop and Grace Drury followed with RBI singles.

In the fifth, Rayna Lloyd provided an RBI single. Marymount scored one in the seventh but would pull no closer.

UMW saw seven players collect a hit, with Brigid Ward posting a double. Burch allowed one run on five hits in seven innings, with one walk and five strikeouts.

In game two, Marymount went ahead with a home run in the first, but the Eagles tied the score in their half of the first. Shelby Presgrave walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice and to third on a flyout, before scoring on an error.

The Eagles went ahead for good in the second, as Ward knocked home Drury with a single, and that held up as UMW went on to win, 2-1.

Shoop had two singles and a double to lead the Eagles. Samantha Stuart gained the win, allowing one run on two hits in seven innings, with no walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action next Wednesday when they visit Southern Virginia University at 3:00 for a doubleheader.
