UMW Softball Sweeps Catholic With Pair of Shutouts

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a Tuesday doubleheader at Catholic University on Tuesday afternoon in Washington, D.C., winning 1-0 and 2-0. The Eagles improve to 16-12 on the season.

In the opener, the Eagles scored the game's only run in the third. Shelby Presgrave walked, and advanced to third on an error. Emma Schieda followed with a sacrifice fly.

The Eagles had five hits, with Brigid Ward posting a double. Caitlyn Burch scored the shutout win, allowing two hits and no walks with 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

In the second game, UMW forged ahead with a run in the first. Aminah Shakir singled and advanced on a sacrifice, and tagged to go to third on a foul out to left field. Schieda singled to bring Shakir home.

In the third, Shakir and Presgrave singled, and Schieda followed with an RBI single.

Samantha Stuart gained the win, allowing no runs on three hits, with one walk and eight strikeouts. Shakir had three hits and Schieda two for the offense.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Randolph-Macon College at noon for a doubleheader.
