UMW Softball Splits Sunday Doubleheader With Washington Md.

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped the opener, but rebounded to win a tight contest in the finale, as the Eagles split a pair of games at Washington College on Sunday afternoon. UMW, who fell in game one, 6-1, won the second, 4-3, and moves to 13-7 on the season.

In the first game, the Eagles scored a run in the fourth to break open a scoreless game. Hailee Danneker scored on an infield bases-loaded error for UMW's run. 

The Shorewomen answered with two in the fourth and four in the sixth, as a pair of errors led to four unearned runs.

Emma Schieda led the Eagles with a single and double, and Rayna Lloyd added a pair of hits for the Eagles. Caitlyn Burch took the loss, as she allowed two earned runs on seven hits in six innings. She walked none and struck out four.

In the second game, UMW scored on a Bridget Laychak sacrifice fly in the first, but Wash College tieed the score with a run in their half of the inning. UMW went back ahead in the second on a bases-loaded single from Aminah Shakir, but the hosts scored one in the third to tie the score at 2-2. 

Each team scored a run in the fifth, with the Eagles' run coming courtesy of a throwing error on a double steal. UMW gained the decisive run in the sixth, when Shelby Presgrave scored Brigid Ward on an error.

Shakir led the Eagles with three hits, while Shieda had two. Samantha Sturat gained the win, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings, walking three and striking out five.

UMW will be back in action on Tuesday, as the Eagles host Virginia Wesleyan University at 3:00 for a doubleheader.
