Conway Wins 600th as UMW Softball Sweeps NV-Johnson; Stuart Ks 15

The University of Mary Washington softball team pounded out 26 runs in the opener, and freshman pitcher Samantha Stuart struck out 15 batters in the nightcap, as the Eagles swept a doubleheader from Northern Vermont University-Johnson, 26-0, and 9-1, in two shortened games in Myrtle Beach on Thursday. With the wins, UMW head coach Dee Conway won her 600th career softball game.

In the opener, UMW pounded out 23 hits, including a single, doble, and triple from Brigid Ward and two singles and a double from Kennedy Darling. UMW scored 11 in the first, one in the second, seven in the third, one in the fourth,  and six in the sixth. Nya Lloyd singled and tripled and drove in four runs, while Emma Schieda and Emma Dickson singled and doubled and drove in three each.

Caitlyn Burch gained the win, allowing no runs on one hit in three innings, with one walk and nine strikeouts.

In the second game, freshman Stuart led the way with 15 strikeouts from the pitcher's circle, while the offense was paced by Schieda's single, home run, three runs scored and four RBI, and Nya Lloyd's single, triple, and three RBI.

Stuart had a no hitter to the sixth inning, giving up one run on two hits with no walks and 15 strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action a week from Thursday with a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader at Bridgewater College.
